The PREDIMED trial — one of the largest and most cited nutrition studies ever conducted — compared a Mediterranean diet supplemented with extra-virgin olive oil, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with mixed nuts (including walnuts), and a standard low-fat control diet. The nut group showed a 30% reduction in major cardiovascular events, including heart attack and stroke, compared to the control group (Estruch et al., 2013).
